Mike Bobbitt - Off the Mike Interview.

AJ Finney’s Brain Don’t Work No Good

AJ Finney is pretty fantastic. He’s high energy…that doesn’t come close to describing that! He’s a manic ball of comedy energy and instantly likable! I’ve gotten to work with him once, but I saw him again earlier this year at the Detroit Comedy Festival. He’s a super awesome guy who just released his new CD this week! He was nice enough to let me bounce some questions off of him. Enjoy!

I’ve gotten to see you a couple times now and I’m amazed at you manic energy on stage. How did your style come about?

I think over the years I’ve gotten more comfortable letting the audience see me for all my internal disorders. Were most people hide their insanity with medication, I embrace my eccentricities and employ improvisation as tool wrangle my ADHD. That’s not saying that my chosen lifestyle over the years hasn’t also intensified my already overactive imagination and anxiety issues.

You do well with audiences and your peers respect you a whole lot too. Are you planning on staying in the midwest or do you have plans to make a move to one of the coasts.

I will always consider the Midwest home, but I will go where I need to in the future. Right now I’m enjoying all the experiences the road has to offer like interesting conversations with strangers, canned beer, black outs, sleeping in my car, radio interviews, hecklers, art museums, hipster dive bars, waking up naked in a hotel lobby, malls, strip clubs, Canada, who’s in my bed…wait this isn’t my bed, all for 30-60 minutes of stage time, to battle for laughs and I love every minute of it.

You’re new CD is coming out this week…unless I’m mistaken about that! Tell me about it!

The CD is titled “AJ Finney My Brain Don’t Work No Good” which was recorded live at Stanford’s Comedy Club in Kansas City, and is being released Tuesday July 26th on Uproar Records. It’s an explorative experience about how I interpret the world through my rusty bucket of wiggle worms, interlaced with stories of love, loss, rum, and my intense obsession with green beans.

You have a lot of festivals under your belt. Do you have any advice for people who are maybe doing one for their first time?

Submit to as many festivals as possible. If you don’t make it, hey apply next year or attend anyway as an audience member. If you get in have as much fun as possible. I’ve actually gotten more work from fellow comedians that I’ve met at competitions than I ever have by winning one. “Networking is the name of the game”

I find with the auditioning process for a festival or any big thing I tend to get in my head and psyche myself out. How do you stay level headed when you go out for things?

With festivals and auditions, do as many as possible, the more you do the easier it gets. Always perform with confidence. My opinion is they aren’t judging you’re material as much as they’re judging you as a person, do they like you?, can they sell you?..etc.

I’m proud of the fact that newer comedians read my site and I have access to picking the brains of some great comedians like yourself. What advice do you have for the newer people?

First off thank you for the compliment Mike. My advice to anyone starting off is to become completely obsessed with the art form itself, the history, the artists, the formulas, everything comedy. Realize your career choice is a marathon not a sprint, it takes time to develop your voice as an artist.

Where can people find out more about you?

Glazer: Rising Star T.J. Miller to Join Pal Nick Vatterott in Cameo @ Stanford's

I have been in the entertainment biz long enough to know most people you help on the way up, forget you fast once they make it to the top...

They say nice things, but God help you if you need them for anything. Then there are the rare exceptions, like Lewis Black, who became a top three comedy star in the early 2000's. Yet he came back to help open our club at the Legends in 2007. Lewis was getting around $100,000 per show, but since we were pals, and he gave us credit for helping jump start his stand up career he came in twice for much, much less money.

Great guy.

A few years back we gave another young comic a shot, T.J. Miller.

He had few headlining gigs at the time but I liked his clips and he had a couple credits. He was doing a series called "Carpoolers" and had a nice part, co-lead in the film Cloverfield. Still he was not well known as a stand up comic. He came in, did great, was fun to work with and couldn't have been nicer. In fact we had his family to each show, they were in town from Denver. We became buds - who knew?

Since then Miller has without any question been one of Hollywood's most sought after comedy film stars of the new Brat Pack. His credits are just too many to name but here are some: How To Train Your Dragon (now shooting Dragon Two) Yogi Bear (park ranger Jones), Unstoppable,Gulliver's Travels, Get Him to The Greek,The Goods, She's Out of My League.

Now he's shooting three new films including one with Steve Carrel (The Office) Our Idiot Brother w/ Paul Rudd and is THE star of a new film with Heather Locklear.

There's more...

He's a regular when time permits on Chelsea Handler. I don't know where T.J. finds the time.

Now TJ has asked me to help jump start his co-stars career, Nick Vatterott. Nick is outstanding and has been on Jimmy Fallen twice this year. So Nick will headline and as a total bonus TJ is coming in this week to Co Star with his best friend.

Damn nice of TJ. We can no longer afford him, yet here he is in anyway.

"I can't tell you guys how much I love Kansas City," Miller says. "It's my home away from home. My two favorite clubs are Comedy Works in Denver and Stanford's in KC. The Glazers are worth the price of a ticket just to watch each night. And my favorite radio guy - without a doubt - is Johnny Dare."

Come see this twosome this week - Wed-Sunday. TJ has so much talent and charisma it's scary.

P.S. Cheech and Chong's Tommy Chong will do ONE club this year. ONE. Chong live at Stanford's August 12/13 four shows. Last time to KC it was Cheech and Chong at the Midland and it sold out.

More summer fun.

Whisker Wars

This is my pick for the greatest show idea of 2011! Thank You IFC!!!

Whisker Wars

This summer, the fascinating and hair raising world of competitive facial hair growing is coming to IFC. Whisker Wars, a seven episode reality series produced and narrated by award-winning producer Thom Beers (Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, IRT: Deadliest Road, Storage Wars, Ax Men, Coal), premieres Friday, August 5 at 11:00pm ET/PT.

The series follows a devoted group of whisker warriors as they travel the country competing for top bearding honors in preparation for the World Championship Competition in Trondhjem, Norway. Historically, Germany has long dominated the field but now there is an upstart squad on the horizon - Beard Team USA. In an effort to solidify their standing, more than 80 local U.S. chapters are coming together to form the ultimate American bearding team. Self-appointed Captain of Beard Team USA, Phil Olsen will lead them in their attempt to stage an upset and bring home the World title. However, Phil's quest quickly shifts from building the team to holding it together as his motives come into question and tensions flare between his star players.

"The eccentricities and dedication of the bearding community is absolutely riveting and once you add the competition element, it becomes a true sporting event," said Executive Producer Thom Beers "Whisker Wars has it all - rivalry, tragedy, love, jealousy and passion. It's an epic story."

The beardsmen generally compete in five categories: Moustache, Partial Beard, Full Beard Groomed, Freestyle and the prestigious, Full Beard Natural. They are judged on overall appearance, style and personality. Whisker Wars introduces viewers to some of the country's top beardsmen in all categories including two-time World Champion in the Full Beard Natural category, Jack Passion. Jack has a clear goal: to become the first "Professional Beardsman" and nothing will get in his way. Not even his fellow beardsmen who are vying for his spot including last year's national champion Aarne Bielefeldt, the Gotham City Beard Alliance's Myk O'Connor, and president of the Austin Facial Hair Club, Bryan Nelson. Throughout the season, the beardsmen's love of country and sport is put to the test as they battle each other and eventually other nations for the crowning achievement of World Champion.

Whisker Wars is executive produced by Thom Beers, Philip D. Segal and Jeff Conroy with Jay Bennett and Diane Kay Bennett as series producers for Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company. Debbie DeMontreux, Dan Pasternack and Jennifer Caserta serve as executive producers for IFC.

Morty's Comedy Joint

I will be performing at Morty's Comedy Joint July 21st-23rd with the very funny Donnell Rawlings.

Who is Donnell?
Donnell Rawlings is an overnight success a decade in the making. You’ve seen him on Comedy Central’s award winning and critically celebrated Chappelle’s Show as ‘Ashy Larry’, the 70’s jheri curled ‘Beautiful’, and numerous other characters he’s played. Donnell is the franchise player Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan wanted as a writer and prime time player on their team. Since Dave Chappelle had business to take care of in Africa, Donnell was asked to step into the huge shoes Dave left behind, and host the Lost Episodes. “Hilarious” is what Linda Stasi of The New York Post calls Donnell’s performance as host.
