Chicago comic John Roy is a unique voice on modern urban life.

A city dweller all his life, John grew up in Chicago’s ethnically diverse Rogers Park neighborhood, the son of an ex Jesuit who worked for Chicago’s urban Loyola University, and a psychotherapist. Growing up white and Catholic in a neighborhood full of African Americans, Orthodox Jews, Nigerians, Mexicans, Indians, Pakistanis, and every ethnic and religious group imaginable gave John a unique perspective on getting along in a crowded world. John’s life saving heart surgery and altruistic parents gave him an appreciation of the importance of comedy as a means to social change. Chicago’s rich cultural heritage, economic differences, and fast paced lifestyle contributed to his observations on how we get by in a changing world.

John began his professional career at the famous Zanies Comedy Club on Wells St. in Chicago’s Old Town. He went on to tour the country’s best clubs, including the Laugh Stop in Houston, and the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, where John became a regular perfomer in 2002. In 2003, he appeared on the CBS television show, “Star Search,” and was its first champion, earning 100,000 dollars and a development deal with CBS.

A move to Los Angeles traded one city for another, and John began to soak in the new cultures, lifestyles, and history of his new home and examine them in his comedy.

In 2003, John performed at the NACA Central convention and was the most requested act in any category. In 2004, John appeared in the prestigious US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, as a square on “Hollywood Squares,” and on HBO. John has appeared many times on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom” radio program, available in over 200 markets. John is a regular performer at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, the prestigious “Comedy Death Ray” show at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in Los Angeles, and the Hollywood Improv.

John appeared on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” in the 2005-2006 season, and a November 2005 episode of CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” In 2006, John contributed an essay to CollegeHumor.com that was collected in their nationally released book. John appeared in several episodes of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” where he advanced to the semifinals of the reality show/ competition.

In 2007, John made an unprecedented four appearances in two months on the nationally syndicated TV show, “Comics Unleashed.” His CD, “1246 W. Arthur,” was released, featuring John headlining at his home club of Zanies in Chicago. He became a regular performer at the Comic Strip in New York City, and made his second appearance on “Craig Ferguson.”

In January, 2008 John made his debut performance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” He also had the honor of performing for the World Bank in Washington, D.C. In May, he received a deal from RBC Records to record his nationally distributed CD, “Dressed for Recess,” available in stores and on ITunes August 5. John also appeared on Fox News’ “The Red Eye,” and VH-1′s “100 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time.” He also appeared on TBS as part of their “Bitcoms” promotion.

In 2009, John will perform for a second time on “The Tonight Show,” and continue his regular appearances on “The Red Eye.”

John was invited to the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Chicago in June of 2009, where he taped a performance for TBS’ new show, “Very Funny.”

John is managed by Dave Rath at Generate.

Dan Cummins & Black Sky Radio

FRIDAY AUGUST 19TH at 3:00 cst LIVE IN THE BLACK SKY STUDIO DAN CUMMINS!

“Revenge is Near announces the presence of a distinct voice in comedy. That’s not an easy thing to do right of the gate, but it’s the reason Cummins’ belongs alongside the other comics on this list.” – Patrick Bromley, from About.com’s “The Best Debut Comedy Albums of 2009″

“We love Dan Cummins, plain and simple. Crazy with a Capital F (is) another smart, endearing, and sarcastic soaked set.” – Punchline Magazine.com’s “The 10 Must Have Stand-up DVDs from 2010″

“Cummins’ comedy runs more on bizarre than classical, more on oddity than traditional comedy. And thank goodness for that — good comedy thrives on the new, on the fresh. Too many comedians, after all, articulate what “everybody else is thinking.” Cummins says what nobody else but him is thinking.” – The Inlander’s review of Crazy with a Capital F, by Daniel Walters

“Here’s why we dig Dan Cummins: We’ve seen a table full of Blue-Collar-Comedy fans elbow to elbow with college-aged hipsters and all of them were doubled over in laughter at the same Cummins bit. That’s not always easy to do. The fact is, Cummins smartly writes to a broad audience, but his own intelligence and cleverness never gets lost in the mix. As a result, comedy nerds can still geek out on subject matter or how a phrase is turned. Top it all off with a giant dollop of unassuming likability. We say it’s a win.” – Lastgascomedy.com

In the last five years, Dan has released two critically and commercially successful CDs on Warner Brothers Records, Revenge is Near, and Crazy with Capital F, both debuting in the top 10 of the Billboard Comedy Charts, and both making numerous year end top 10 lists, including Itunes Rewind’s Best Comedy CDs of 2010. He’s also toured relentlessly, bringing his jokes to over 200 colleges, clubs, theaters, and the world’s most prestigious comedy festivals, including two trips to the Montreal Comedy Festival. In addition to headlining live shows from Maine to Alaska, Dan’s also made numerous televised stand-up appearances, including performances on The Tonight Show, The Late, Late Show, Last Comic Standing, and numerous Comedy Central programs, including both a half-hour special, Comedy Central Presents Dan Cummins, and an hour-long comedy special, Crazy with a Capital F. One of the most prolific writers on the national scene, Dan continues to craft new jokes and stories, and bring them to countless audiences in his quest to build a fan base large enough to pack clubs and theaters in whatever town he chooses to travel to, just to hear whatever he has to say. So do yourself a favor, and start listening.

I going to be in the 2011 San Fan Comedy Competition

About the Competition

The San Francisco Comedy Competition is an annual, multi-week, judged, stand-up comedy contest. Over thirty comedians, out of hundreds who apply, perform in shows held in comedy clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos and theaters in San Francisco and around the Bay Area.

Contestants perform 3-7 minute long sets in one of two preliminary weeks, consisting of six shows in six venues over six nights. The top five from each preliminary week will meet in the semi-finals week, which requires them to perform 8-12 minute long sets for another six shows. The top five from the semi-finals move on to the finals. In the finals, they will perform 15-20 minute long sets in five more shows…and, a winner is crowned.

This is a judged contest. Each contestant will perform for a unique group of judges for every show they do. Judges score each contestant in seven categories.

The San Francisco Comedy Comedy Competition shares the same basic format and structure as the Seattle International Competition—and both competitions share the same Executive Producer, Jon Fox.

Twice a national finalist at the prestigious HBO Comedy Festival, Troy Baxley is already well-known in comedy circles.

The best restaurants are those where chefs dine on their nights off. Troy Baxley is the comic that other comics, from open-mic’ers to top A-List comedians watch every chance they get. Even Letterman talent scout Eddie Brill calls himself a “huge Troy Baxley fan.” Word.

Others are catching on too. The Onion points out that “…only recently has [Baxley’s] weird brand of impish comedy started to penetrate the mainstream…” and from the way people turn out to see him every time he plays a gig, well, tru dat, yo!

Mother Nature shut Down the Lips in Tulsa!

by Billboard Staff | August 08, 2011 6:00 EDT
Wayne Coyne tweeted photos after the Flaming Lips lighting rig fell down.

Of Montreal

Rain, rain did not go away over the weekend, in fact, it wreaked havoc on several outdoor concerts. An in-progress INXS show in Pennsylvania, a Flaming Lips concert in Tulsa, a music festival on Long Island. All were halted and/or canceled due to the blanket of precipitation that covered a large swath of the country over the past few days.

The final day of the Escape to New York music festival had to be called off Sunday following an overnight drenching of the festival grounds, owned by the Shinnecock Indians, on Long Island.

Scheduled to play Sunday were Of Montreal, Mates of State and Tiger Love. Refunds were given and organizers are already gearing up for next year. "With amazing reviews and a close to capacity crowd on Saturday, Escape to New York looks forward to returning next year," they said in a statement.

Halfway across the country in Tulsa, Okla., heavy wind and rain knocked down the Flaming Lips' lighting rig before their set on Saturday at the District Block Party. The crew anticipated problems and cleared the stage before the rig crashed down on some of the Oklahoma City band's gear. A roadie claimed that the incident caused about $800,000 in damage. Judging by dramatic video footage of the incident -- in which you can see members of the band looking on -- it's hard to dispute that claim.

Video: The Flaming Lips' Lighting Gear Crashes Down

"The Oklahoma wind and rain was a little bit more unpredictable than we had hoped, and we had a bad gust," frontman Wayne Coyne told NewsOK.com. "The whole thing is shambolic and a bit dangerous and we're working to get as much off of the stage before we get hit with the second wave."

INXS was in the middle of its fourth song Sunday at the Mohegan Sun casino in Pennsylvania when a rain storm shorted out the electrical system and blew out the band's amplifiers. The Aussie rockers made up for it by sticking around and chatting with fans after the cancelation.

Ironically, the weekend's biggest festival -- Lollapalooza in Chicago -- experienced only minimal disruptions, despite getting soaked with rain on its final day.

82 Things You Didn’t Know About Andy Warhol

Eighty-three years ago today, Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While the pop-art icon passed away in 1987, his legacy is still going strong. We’re toasting to Warhol’s memory with highlights from The Andy Warhol Museum’s official chronology, as well as Warhol’s own writings. As the artist himself once wrote in The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, “Being born is like being kidnapped. And then sold into slavery.” We couldn’t agree more.

1. Andy Warhol’s father Andrei Warhola worked construction and labor jobs; Andrei’s wife Julia earned spare cash by cleaning houses and selling handmade crafts while raising their three sons: Paul, John, and Andrew.

2. Warhol contracted Sydenham’s chorea as a young boy, and was confined to his home for more than two months. The illness is characterized by rapid, uncontrollable movements brought on by rheumatic fever, and is sometimes referred to as “St. Vitus’s dance.”

3. Warhol’s mother encouraged her nine-year-old to explore his interest in art and popular culture while he was sick, so Warhol began to collect photos of movie stars.

4. He’d also take his own pictures and develop them in his parents’ basement, which he used as a darkroom.

5. In elementary school, Warhol attended free Saturday art classes at the Carnegie Institute.

15. Gerard Malanga was arrested in Italy in 1968 for forging Warhol’s paintings.

16. Warhol once showed five paintings in a window display at New York’s Bonwit Teller department store.

17. His favorite thing to buy was underwear.

18. At 29, Warhol had a nose job.

19. Warhol said that he adopted his gray-haired look while in his 20s so that people would notice how young he looked in the face.

20. Julia Warhola moved to New York to live with her son in 1952. Warhol and his mother would live together until 1971, a year before she passed away.

21. His mother often contributed artistically to Warhol’s paintings, and would sometimes sign them for him.

22. Warhol was a self-proclaimed “mama’s boy.”

23. Warhol published an absurdist cookbook in 1959 with Suzie Frankfurth called Wild Raspberries, inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1957 film, Wild Strawberries.

24. Warhol enjoyed eating alone, and wanted to open a chain of restaurants called “ANDY-MATS — ‘The Restaurant for the Lonely Person.’”

25. Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol met in Pasadena in 1963, when Warhol was exhibiting his paintings of Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley. The Andy Warhol Museum‘s current exhibit Twisted Pair: Marcel Duchamp/Andy Warhol, investigates the two artists’ relationship.

26. While Warhol was in LA, Dennis Hopper threw him a “movie star party.”

27. Warhol designed the costumes for the 1963 Broadway production of James Thurber’s The Beast in Me, but wasn’t credited because he wasn’t a union member.

Review on my new CD by Punchline!

Finney: “My Brain Don’t Work No Good” (Review)

By Daniel Berkowitz | August 1, 2011 at 1:19 pm | 0 Comments | news, Reviews | Tags:

“The hardest part about killing a unicorn,” AJ Finney declares, “is sobering up after about three days and trying to explain to your neighbor why you’ve been shooting arrows through his motorcycle.” This is Finney in a nutshell: a self-affirmed idiot-boozehound with a penchant for drugs, sex and mayhem.

On his debut album My Brain Don’t Work No Good, Finney truly sees the humor in unfortunate situations. After undergoing a hernia operation, for example, he takes comfort in his Vicodin prescription. When he beds a woman with poor landscaping down under, he tells her to be proud of it (but to simply warn him). And when he reveals that he was dropped several times as a baby, he tells the audience they should laugh at his suffering.

Finney comes off extremely confident, never seeming unsure of his material’s power. Listening to the album in its entirety, it’s safe to say that Finney is 100 percent invested in and committed to his material. At times, though, Finney gets a little too cute. He refers to his brain as “a rusty bucket of wiggle worms,” and when trying to pick up a woman at a bar, he declares, “Welcome to heaven. Population: me.” These are lines that don’t to merit inclusion in Finney’s otherwise solid act.

AJ Finney: “The Infamous Canoe Trip” by dgadino

In this way, Finney’s pacing is a bit scattered. He’s a very lively and energetic personality; he talks fast and he has a unique inflection that works well for his voice. But at times, he breaks his rhythm for unknown reasons. This doesn’t hurt the album, but it doesn’t help, either. Despite these criticisms, My Brain Don’t Work No Good is a wonderful debut. The content on the album is so rich and nuanced that any objections one may have are rendered almost negligible.

Finney is a storyteller: a tad verbose at times, but that’s part of his charm. Finney milks his jokes for every ounce of comedy he can find. He doesn’t go straight to the punch line; he instead massages the bit, coaxing out the funny and taking us on a journey. As Finney says, his being on stage is “a bit therapeutic.” He’s obviously discovering himself while performing. As he’s going through this emotional journey, he’s taking us along for the ride. It’s a crazy ride, but it’s a fascinating one, as well.

You can now download AJ Finney’s My Brain Don’t Work No Good on iTunes.
